When you say 'episodic VN in Early Access", i avert my gaze.Īnd yet. The small team working on this did a tremendously good job and they deserve the support. The first episode is free, however I do recommend buying the full game. (Is Sticky Fingers a JoJo's reference? hmmmm)Ĭurrently there are only two episodes available, with more to come. Many references to memes and jokes can be spotted in the dialogues as well as in the achievement's art and names. While it is an immersive horror-mystery type of game, the humor that can be found in it is top notch. Scarlet Hollow has a very precise, sweet spot of horror by building tension and making you feel uneasy at times. Even if you just chose to eat a PB&J, that choice will influence the story at some point. This is a game where your choices ACTUALLY matter. The richness of the story keeps you on edge until the very end of the episodes, leaving you craving for more. While the episodes aren't that long and there are only two released at the moment, there is still a lot to do in the game thanks to perks! The perks are honestly giving you hours of content experimenting with them and getting different scenarios every time. You start the game with two perks that you choose and that will impact the gameplay. The most interesting part about the game is, for me, the perks system. Scarlet Hollow is the best visual novel I have played in a while. Each major character has dozens-and often hundreds-of hand-drawn sprites that interact with backgrounds and capture a full range of lighting, emotion, environment, and outfit changes. Every background in the game is drawn by hand and inked on massive 19x24 inch paper.
